With a population around 280,000, the Naxis mainly live in compact communities in Yulong Naxi Autonomous County of Lijiang Municipality.

The Naxi Village occupies a total area of 49.5 acres. At the entrance of the village is the sculpture of “Sanduo”, the guarding God of the Naxi people and a large relief wall with the theme of Creating the Century. The combination of important architectures like “Sanfangyizhaobi” (one compound consisting of three houses on three sides with one screen on the remaining side), folk residence courtyard, the Huama Workshop, Art Building and Gallery House featured with heavy color paintings and elegant wood carving sets off by contrast the Sifang Street in Lijiang.

The Naxi people enjoy long history and rich culture. The famous Dongba pictograph is dubbed as the living fossil of pictograph. It is the only pictograph which is still used and circulated among the people in the world. The Dongba Scriptures, the ancient codes and records written in Dongba Pictograph, is an encyclopedia of the ancient Naxi people. The fresh and graceful Dongjing Music of the Naxi people is integrated with melodies and phonology of the palace banquet music of the ancient Central Plains. As a rare quintessence in the present national music, it is still circulated in the areas inhabited by the Naxi people in compact communities.
