Tour Yunnan starts from Yunnan Nationalities Village
The Manchu Compound

Yunnan has a Manchu population of 120,000, who mainly inhabit urban areas in Kunming, Baoshan, Simao, Qujing and Chuxiong prefectures and municipalities.  A considerable portion of the Manchu folks have engaged in administrative, engineering, cultural or medical professions.  Migration of the Manchu minority into Yunnan started in early Qing Dynasty.  In the 20th year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign (1681 AD), Beizi Zhangtai took a mighty army of 100,000 soldiers to Yunnan and conquered Kunming.  Legendary tales say some of the Manchu officers and men in the victorious troops refused to return to North China areas, and settled down in Yunnan.  Later afterwards, more Manchu people came to Yunnan and settled down in Kunming and other Yunnan areas, where they served as government officials, started businesses or fought the Japanese invaders during the WWII period.  In the middle and late 20th century, daily increasing Manchu people also came to Yunnan to seek careers.  In the old days, those people used to live in compact communities on Ru’an Street in Kunming City, which was then nicknamed “Street of the Manchu people”.

The Manchu Compound was constructed in architectural styles of the civilian compounds of the Manchu minority people in Benxi City of Northeast China, whereas large amount of architectural factors of local Kunming compounds had been incorporated in the buildings.  For this reason, the Manchu Compound constructed in the Nationalities Village is deemed as the perfect integration of architectural styles of Northeastern China and Kunming area.
