The Water-splashing Festival
An annual festival of the Dai, Bulang, De’ang and A’chang minority groups who observe the Dai-minority calendar, the Water-splashing Festival is the most joyous and influential annual celebration for the Dai people. Lasting 3 to 4 days around April 11 each year
the Dai people spend the first two days to see off the old and the latter two days to usher in the new. The Dai people start the celebration by going to Buddhist monastery to bathe the Buddha, after that they splash water on one another and the water sprinkles are carrier of good wishes and blessings. Other important events of the Festival include going to the fair, throwing lucky pouches and dragon boat races.
